Dongfeng Tianlong and Dongfeng Hercules have been on the market for over a year, quickly gaining popularity due to their exceptional quality, reliability, and fuel efficiency. Their sales have consistently grown, with monthly volumes surpassing 1,000 units for Tianlong and 2,000 units for Hercules in 2007. This marked a new high for domestic heavy truck sales, with both models reaching 3,000 units in total. The dCi11 high-horsepower engine, which powers these trucks, is produced by the Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Engine Factory.
The factory is currently the only domestic manufacturer capable of producing a full range of engines, including gasoline, diesel, and natural gas, with displacements from 2 to 11 liters. Since its joint venture, the plant has actively pursued opportunities to develop advanced power solutions, such as the dCi11 project. This initiative represents a significant step forward in the development of Dongfeng commercial vehicles, particularly the Tianlong model. The project was completed in just 22 months, setting a remarkable record for the new Dongfeng plant.
The dCi11 engine is an inline six-cylinder, four-stroke, turbocharged, and intercooled diesel engine imported from Renault. It features an EECU electronic control system and common rail direct injection technology. With a displacement of 11.1 liters and power ranging from 270 to 420 horsepower, it meets Euro III emissions standards and is capable of reaching Euro IV. This engine represents the pinnacle of international high-power engine technology.
To ensure the quality and engineering excellence of this advanced product, the engine plant adopted a construction concept centered around "planning, phased implementation, rolling development, lean design, and lean investment." It established four flexible production lines for cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, crankshafts, and camshafts, along with traceable assembly and testing stations.
During the project's development, the factory sent 53 engineers and managers to Renault Truck Corporation and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. for training in product development, manufacturing techniques, and logistics management. The dCi11 engine project has already seen an investment of approximately 350 million yuan, with an annual capacity of 10,000 engines. The first phase is now complete, and the factory is preparing to start the second phase, aiming to increase output to 50,000 units.
On May 18, 2006, the dCi11 engine was officially launched. Just three months later, it faced a major challenge: the first China International Truck Fuel Contest. Rather than avoiding the competition, the factory saw it as a chance to test the engine’s performance. In the contest, the Dongfeng Tianlong truck equipped with the dCi11 engine won the “Most Fuel-Efficient Engine Award.†This achievement proved the engine’s capability to deliver outstanding performance and fuel economy.
According to the factory technicians, the dCi11 engine was developed based on Renault’s technology, specifically tailored for the Chinese market. It boasts a minimum specific fuel consumption of less than 190 g/kWh, setting a domestic record. With high reliability, it can run up to 800,000 km without major repairs. Its multiple injection system reduces combustion noise, offering a quieter driving experience. It also performs well in cold conditions, starting at -40°C. The fully electronically controlled engine ensures optimal performance and fuel efficiency while providing drivers and maintenance personnel with easy access to vehicle data.
