A recent report revealed that researchers at Beijing University of Chemical Technology have developed an innovative corn fermentation process for producing acetone and butanol. This method achieves a remarkable butanol yield of 70% and a starch conversion rate of 25%, with the entire fermentation process completed in just 36 hours. The technology has been successfully implemented in pilot production at the North China Pharmaceutical Factory’s 107 workshop, where it has maintained a "zero" defect rate for four consecutive years. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the industry, setting a national benchmark and substantially lowering production costs.
Acetone and butanol are essential chemical raw materials and solvents widely used in industrial applications. With the rapid growth of downstream industries, demand for these substances has surged. According to available data, annual consumption in China exceeds 500,000 tons, while domestic production capacity remains below 400,000 tons. As a result, large quantities of acetone and butanol must be imported each year to meet market needs.
