Dongfeng Tianlong and Dongfeng Hercules have been on the market for over a year, quickly gaining popularity due to their superior quality, reliability, and fuel efficiency. Their sales have steadily grown, with monthly figures surpassing 1,000 units for the Tianlong and 2,000 units for the Hercules in 2007. This success set new records for domestic heavy truck sales, with the number of vehicles reaching 3,000 units. The dCi11 high-horsepower engine, developed by the Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Engine Factory, has become the core power unit for these models. The Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Engine Factory is currently the only domestic manufacturer that offers a full range of engines, including gasoline, diesel, and natural gas, with displacements ranging from 2 to 11 liters. Since its joint venture, the factory has actively embraced opportunities to develop advanced power solutions, such as the dCi11 engine project, which represents international standards in high-performance engines. This project was completed in just 22 months, marking a significant milestone in the development of the new Dongfeng plant. The dCi11 engine is a six-cylinder, four-stroke, turbocharged, and intercooled diesel engine imported from Renault. It features an electronically controlled injection system and common rail direct injection technology. With a displacement of 11.1 liters, it delivers power ranging from 270 to 420 horsepower and meets Euro III emission standards, with potential to reach Euro IV. It represents one of the most advanced high-power engines globally. To ensure the quality and performance of this internationally advanced product, the engine factory adopted a strategic approach, including phased implementation, continuous development, lean design, and efficient investment. It established four flexible production lines for cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, crankshafts, and camshafts, along with traceable assembly and testing stations. During the project's construction, 53 engineers and managers were sent to Renault Truck Corporation and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. for training in product development, manufacturing techniques, and logistics management. The dCi11 engine project has invested approximately 350 million yuan and has an annual capacity of 10,000 units. The first phase has been completed, and the factory is now preparing for the second phase, which will increase production to 50,000 units. On May 18, 2006, the dCi11 engine was officially launched. Just three months later, it faced its first major test: the China International Truck Fuel Contest. Instead of avoiding the challenge, the factory used it as an opportunity to prove the engine’s quality and reliability. In the competition, the Dongfeng Tianlong, equipped with the dCi11 engine, won the “Most Fuel-Efficient Engine Award.” This achievement highlighted the engine’s excellent design and performance, combining global technology with user-centric thinking to protect customer interests. The dCi11 proved itself as a true “fuel champion” in the contest. At the awards ceremony, Dai Dingyi, Vice President of the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, praised the fuel efficiency of the Dongfeng Tianlong, saying, “I was shocked by its advantage in the fierce competition.” Song Jian, Executive Deputy Director of the Institute of Automotive Engineering at Tsinghua University, noted, “From start to acceleration, the Dongfeng Tianlong had the shortest time.” According to technicians at the Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Engine Plant, the dCi11 engine was developed through the digestion and absorption of Renault technology, tailored for the Chinese market. It features a minimum specific fuel consumption of less than 190 g/kWh, setting a domestic record. It is highly reliable, capable of running 800,000 km without major repairs. It also supports multiple injections, reducing noise and offering a quiet driving environment. The engine starts smoothly even at -40°C and provides optimal performance and fuel efficiency while allowing easy access to engine data for drivers and mechanics.
