Silk protein cling film can maintain better freshness

Silk protein cling film can maintain better freshness

Scientists have invented silk protein cling film that can hold fruit for more than a week as a natural, biodegradable plastic wrap made from alternative plastics. The international community has been paying more and more attention to the pollution of plastic waste, especially the crisis of entering the ocean. Some people estimate that by 2050 there will be more plastics in the world's oceans. Doctors also warned that certain types of plastic containers may be harmful to health.

Now, biomedical engineers at the Tufts University have developed a technology that uses a protein in silk that helps make it one of the toughest materials in nature.
This is a wise way of considering how to manage the resources of our planet, perhaps using renewable energy systems, rather than non-reproducible systems. By dip coating in a small amount of liquid containing fibroin, freshness can also be applied with a spray. Silk is naturally produced.
The results of the study showed that silk fibroin film prolongs the freshness of perishable fruits by slowing fruit oxidation, prolonging fruit firmness and preventing dehydration.
