What Kind of Range Can You Expect from Lithium-Ion Batteries?

Lithium-ion batteries are the most commonly used for electric vehicles due to their convenience and performance. To ensure these batteries last as long as possible, follow these guidelines:

  • Before using a new lithium-ion battery, charge it fully. Many people mistakenly use their e-bike batteries right after purchase, which can reduce the battery's lifespan and total capacity.
  • After discharging, recharge the battery immediately. Constantly bringing the battery to full discharge can damage it and shorten its life.
  • Avoid exposing lithium-ion batteries to high temperatures. Heat accelerates battery aging. The optimal operating temperature should be kept between 68-77°F (20-25°C). Even a slight increase in temperature can drastically reduce the battery's lifespan.
  • Low temperatures and partially discharged batteries tend to have longer lifespans.
  • Never charge a battery that is still very cold. If your bike has been ridden in freezing conditions, wait until it warms up before charging it.
  • Always use the original charger provided with your electric bike.

Let’s break it down using watt-hours (Wh) to measure battery capacity. This can help you estimate how far you can ride before running out of juice.

An e-bike battery is measured by its voltage (V) and ampere-hours (Ah). To calculate the Wh, multiply the voltage by the ampere-hours. For instance:

A 50V 15Ah battery has a capacity of 750Wh (50 x 15 = 750).

A 30V 20Ah battery has a capacity of 600Wh (30 x 20 = 600).

On average, an e-bike battery provides about 1 mile for every 4-35Wh of energy. For flat terrain, energy consumption is minimal, so the range is higher. Let’s assume 4Wh per mile:

750 / 4 = 187.5 miles.

600 / 4 = 150 miles.

For mountainous terrains, energy consumption can be much higher, around 30Wh per mile:

750 / 30 = 25 miles.

600 / 30 = 20 miles.
