Long Grove 2nd Alarm brush fire 7-4-12 caused by fireworks

The Long Grove Fire Protection District responded to a wildland fire on the afternoon of July 4th, 2012, behind a home at 3448 Hidden Valley Road. The fire began in a dried-out marsh area filled with tall cattails, and quickly spread due to strong winds. First responders arrived and immediately recognized the potential danger, as the fire was close to several homes. They called for additional support and requested a structural response as a precaution. As the flames grew and the wind pushed the fire further, more units were dispatched to help manage the situation. Because the neighborhood lacks hydrants, water tankers and wildland crews from Lake and McHenry County were brought in to assist. Firefighters worked both in the marsh and along the yards of multiple homes, many of which sit on large, multi-acre lots. Local residents also played a key role in the effort. Several neighbors used garden hoses to protect their homes while firefighters worked to contain the blaze. At one point, the fire was seen moving toward homes to the east of the original location, prompting even more attention and resources. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department later arrested an 18-year-old male who was at the house where the fire started. He was charged with starting the fire using fireworks. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion but was released later that night. Multiple departments from surrounding areas provided mutual aid, including units from Buffalo Grove, Palatine, Lake Zurich, Arlington Heights, and many others. In total, 18 acres were burned, and it took roughly seven hours for the last units to leave the scene. Larry Shapiro was on-site and captured several powerful images of the event. He plans to release a full gallery and a video later in the day. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with fireworks and the importance of responsible outdoor activities.
