Oshkosh purchases Snozzle>
A recent press release at the end of April revealed that Oshkosh, parent company of well-known brands like Pierce, Medtec, and Frontline Communications, has acquired the Snozzle from Crash Rescue Equipment Services, Inc. You can read about this acquisition [here] and [here]. Both announcements include some interesting details:
One of the excerpts mentions that production of the Snozzle will be transferred to Oshkosh's Fire & Emergency Campus in Wisconsin and will be gradually integrated over the next 6-12 months. The SNOZZLE apparatus, known for its innovative design, features a piercing nozzle capable of entering confined spaces such as aircraft cabins or cargo compartments. This allows firefighters to apply firefighting agents directly where they're needed most. Its lightweight and highly flexible extendable turret operates much like an elevated water tower, capable of maneuvering through doorways or over wing exits without posing risks to emergency responders. A standout feature of the product is its patented ability to deliver a full master stream at ground level, making it highly effective for quickly cooling burning aircraft tires and hot brakes. Additionally, the Snozzle excels in reaching areas below ground level, enabling the implementation of the "seat of the fire" method when tackling fuel spill fires.
Robert Conley, President of Crash Rescue, expressed his pride in selling this crucial piece of ARFF (Airport Rescue Fire Fighting) technology to Oshkosh. He highlighted how Grady North and Bob Relyea played key roles in establishing the Snozzle's presence in the ARFF industry. Conley emphasized that Crash Rescue made this decision because they needed to refocus their efforts on their core business—remanufacturing. Their newly ISO 9001:2008 certified remanufacturing operation focuses on providing comprehensive remanufacturing services for ARFF vehicles globally. Their goal is to expand and strengthen their service offerings for military, industrial, and commercial clients. Crash Rescue remains proud of its contributions to the community and is thrilled to know the Snozzle will continue saving lives and protecting property under Oshkosh's ownership.
Historically, the Snozzle has been widely used by ARFF units and was previously available to all manufacturers. However, following Oshkosh's acquisition, it will now exclusively be offered to Oshkosh's subsidiary companies. Over the years, various fire departments have incorporated the Snozzle's telescoping waterway for structural firefighting purposes by mounting it on custom pumpers. For instance, the Orange Fire Department in California has a notable fleet of Seagrave apparatuses, including one built in 1994 that features a 50-foot Snozzle. Similarly, the LaGrange Fire Department in Kentucky, operating a 2000-model Seagrave TB51DA, also utilizes a 50-foot Snozzle with a robust 1,500-GPM pump and a combined 700 gallons of water and 50 gallons of foam. Another example is the Marrero-Estelle Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1 in southern Louisiana, which acquired a 2008 E-ONE Cyclone II equipped with a 65-foot Snozzle. This vehicle complements their existing E-ONE fleet and includes a dual-nozzle tip with a forward-looking camera for enhanced visibility during operations.
As the Snozzle continues to evolve and adapt to modern firefighting needs, its integration into diverse emergency response vehicles underscores its versatility and importance in both aviation and structural firefighting scenarios.
