Oshkosh purchases Snozzle>
In late April, Oshkosh—a parent company of well-known brands like Pierce, Medtec, and Frontline Communications—announced its acquisition of the Snozzle from Crash Rescue Equipment Services, Inc. This move was confirmed in two separate press releases, which you can read [here](link) and [here]. Key excerpts from these announcements highlight the strategic significance of the deal:
"The production of the Snozzle will be transferred to Oshkosh's Fire & Emergency Campus in Wisconsin and will be gradually integrated over the next six to twelve months," reads part of the press release. The Snozzle, renowned for its innovative design, features a piercing nozzle capable of entering confined spaces such as aircraft cabins or cargo holds, allowing for precise firefighting agent deployment. Its lightweight, flexible extendable turret ensures safety for firefighters by enabling operations like an elevated water tower, either through doorways or over wing exits, without posing risks.
Robert Conley, President of Crash Rescue, expressed pride in having Oshkosh take over this crucial piece of ARFF (Aircraft Rescue Firefighting) technology. He credited Grady North and Bob Relyea for pioneering the market acceptance of the Snozzle within the ARFF industry. "Finding a great home for the Snozzle was important to us," Conley explained, emphasizing that focusing on their core business—remanufacturing ARFF vehicles globally—was essential. Their recently ISO 9001:2008 certified remanufacturing operation aims to expand services tailored for military, industrial, and commercial clients. Conley concluded by noting how pleased they are knowing the Snozzle will continue safeguarding lives and property under Oshkosh's ownership.
Historically, the Snozzle has been accessible to all manufacturers. However, following this acquisition, it will now be exclusive to Oshkosh subsidiaries. Over time, various fire departments have adopted the Snozzle for structural firefighting purposes by mounting it on custom pumpers. For instance, the Orange Fire Department in California boasts a substantial fleet of Seagrave apparatus, including some models equipped with a 50-foot Snozzle. Similarly, the LaGrange Fire Department in Kentucky utilized a Seagrave TB51DA model constructed in 2000, featuring a robust 1,500-GPM pump, 700 gallons of water capacity, and dual foam cells totaling 50 gallons. More recently, the Marrero-Estelle Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1 in Louisiana acquired an E-ONE Cyclone II engine in 2008, complete with a 65-foot Snozzle tipped with dual nozzles and a forward-looking camera for enhanced operational capabilities.
As this transition unfolds, it marks a pivotal moment for the future development and integration of the Snozzle technology under Oshkosh’s leadership.
