The 2011 Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) recently wrapped up, drawing a crowd of eager attendees to Indianapolis. The convention center buzzed with energy as exhibitors showcased everything from firefighting apparatus and gear to novelty items like t-shirts and keepsakes. This year, two notable local rigs made appearances: an Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Medtec Type III ambulance graced the Pierce booth, while University Park flaunted a Cyclone II 95-foot rear-mount tower ladder in the E-ONE exhibit.
The conference was a treasure trove of new and exciting apparatus. A standout piece was Seagrave's FDNY Engine 222, prominently displayed in their booth. Ferrara also made waves with FDNY Rescue 4 from Queens and Ladder 137, both meticulously presented in their space. Crimson Fire Equipment debuted a tandem axle rescue vehicle destined for Elizabeth, New Jersey, which was particularly eye-catching in the Crimson booth.
In terms of innovations, Pierce rolled out the new Dash CF chassis paired with a PUC rescue pumper, marking one of its many highlights. Additionally, they showcased a mini-pumper mounted on rubber tracks. Meanwhile, Rosenbauer introduced the Smart Cab, a clever addition designed to accommodate a crew within the confines of a commercial chassis. Their model features a unique two-step mechanism that allows easy access to the crew compartment, along with the option for a fully glass-covered door.
KME introduced two noteworthy models: the Predator Pro Series, an integrated pumper and rescue operation vehicle, and a fresh 79-foot ladder. American LaFrance, on the other hand, announced their decision to offer the Eagle custom chassis to other manufacturers, broadening their market reach. They also mentioned that their LTI aerials could now be purchased separately.
E-ONE’s eMAX pumper series stole the spotlight with its compact, narrow operator’s panel. This series, displayed on a Typhoon chassis, represented a significant step forward in design efficiency.
The conference wasn’t just about the hardware; it was a gathering of ideas, networking opportunities, and a chance to witness the future of firefighting technology. As the FDIC concluded, attendees left inspired by the innovative spirit and dedication to excellence that permeated the event.
