House fire in the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District, 3-29-24

Late last Friday afternoon, specifically at 3:20 PM, the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District received a call about a house fire in the 3700 block of Riverside Drive. By the time the firefighters arrived just moments later, thick smoke was already billowing from the back of a two-story house. The team quickly took action, initiating an external firefighting effort using multiple hoses and aerial operations. Recognizing the need for more resources, they reached out to neighboring departments via the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (M.A.B.A.S.). Their swift efforts managed to bring the blaze under control at 4:14 PM. However, the firefighters stayed on site for another two hours to thoroughly check for any hidden embers that could reignite.
Interestingly, one resident was at home when the fire broke out and managed to evacuate safely. Unfortunately, one cat did not survive, while another remains missing. Initial findings suggest the fire originated on the second floor, though the exact cause is still being investigated.
The house suffered severe damage and is currently uninhabitable. The residents have been provided with temporary accommodation and other forms of support from the American Red Cross. In total, 17 neighboring fire departments either came to the scene or covered the Nunda station during this emergency. The Nunda Rural Fire Protection District expressed their heartfelt thanks to all the agencies and dispatchers involved in handling the situation.

You can see the intense flames and the impressive response from multiple fire trucks, including those from Nunda Rural FPD and Cary FPD, which brought in vehicles from both Ferrara and Sutphen.
