House fire in the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District, 3-29-24

Over the weekend, I came across some updates from the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District's Facebook page about a recent fire incident. It happened on Friday, March 29, around 3:20 PM, in the 3700 block of Riverside Drive. According to their post, firefighters from the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District were on the scene within minutes. They found heavy smoke coming from the back of a two-story house. The team immediately began an aggressive firefighting effort using multiple hoses and truck operations. As the situation was quite intense, they called for additional support through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (M.A.B.A.S.). By 4:14 PM, they had managed to get the fire under control. However, it took another couple of hours for the crews to thoroughly check and extinguish any remaining embers inside the house. Thankfully, one person who lived there got out safely. Unfortunately, a cat didn’t make it, and another is still missing. Early investigations suggest the fire likely started on the second floor, but the exact cause is still being looked into. The house itself suffered significant damage and is no longer habitable. The homeowners are getting help from the American Red Cross for temporary housing and other support. What struck me was the incredible teamwork involved. Seventeen neighboring fire departments either went to the main fire site or covered the Nunda station while they were busy. The Nunda Rural Fire Protection District expressed their thanks to all the agencies and dispatchers who pitched in to assist. Attached to the post were several photos from the scene. You could see the firefighters working hard, the charred remains of the house, and even some of the trucks that came to help, like those from Nunda Rural FPD and Cary FPD. There was also a picture showing some of the damage up close, which really highlighted how serious the situation was. It’s always tough to hear about homes being damaged by fires, but it’s reassuring to know there are so many dedicated professionals out there ready to step in and help when things go wrong.
