Flyability’s 2020 Year in Review—7 Million Euros Raised, Mission to Chernobyl, Data Localization, 21,000+ Webinar Registrants, and More

Although 2020 was a tough year for many, at Flyability we stayed incredibly active and focused on innovation. We had a lot to celebrate, and we’re excited to share some of the highlights from our journey in 2020.

Before we take you through what we achieved last year, we want to extend our warmest wishes to all of our clients, partners, prospects, and supporters around the world for a successful 2021.

7 Million Euros Raised + First U.S. Office Opened

2020 started with big news—our first U.S. office opened in Denver, Colorado, and ended with an exciting milestone: we successfully closed our Series C funding round, raising 7 million Euros (around $8.6 million USD). This investment will fuel our mission to develop drones and software for indoor environments, making inspections safer and more efficient.

The new U.S. office has allowed us to better serve our growing customer base across the Americas, while the additional funds are being used to expand our team and accelerate product development.

Software for Data Localization

At the end of 2020, we launched Inspector 3.0, a powerful tool that enables inspectors to localize data on a 3D map created after each inspection flight. This feature eliminates the guesswork involved in locating defects during visual inspections, allowing maintenance teams to pinpoint issues precisely on a sparse point cloud.

Webinars, Webinars, Webinars

2020 was a year of online learning, and we embraced it wholeheartedly. With conferences moving online due to the pandemic, we hosted 21 webinars throughout the year, reaching over 21,000 registrants and nearly 4,000 attendees.

Some of the most popular topics included:

  • How to Mitigate Intrinsic Safety
  • Indoor 3D Modeling Use Cases: Photogrammetry in Action
  • How to Build and Scale a Drone Program at Your Company
  • Learn How API and ASME Experts Are Working to Expand Drone Inspection Applications

All webinar recordings are available for viewing anytime—check out the full list here.

Case Studies Show Real Impact

We published several case studies in 2020 that highlighted how our drone technology is helping companies save time, money, and improve safety.

Drone Reduces Time Needed for Scrubber Inspection by 98%, Saving 470 Hours of Work

  • Application: Power Generation
  • Client: Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)

The TVA used the Elios 2 to inspect a scrubber at one of its power plants, significantly reducing the time needed and improving worker safety. Read the case study to learn more.

$2 Million Saved Using Elios 2 for Oil Tanker Cargo Inspection

  • Application: Maritime
  • Client: Marine Inspection Services, Ltd

Marine Inspection Services helped an oil tanker manager save $2 million using the Elios 2 for cargo tank inspections. Read the case study to see how.

These are just two examples of the real-world impact we’ve made. Explore all our case studies here.

Supporting Research and Exploration

In 2020, we also supported groundbreaking research and exploration missions. Two of our videos stood out:

Flyability’s Elios Used to Explore Some of the Deepest Ice Caves in the World

This mission took researchers to Greenland to study water movement under ice, helping scientists understand climate change. Read more here.

Elios 2 Tested at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

We helped scientists gather visual data inside Reactor Five, which hadn’t been entered since the 1986 disaster. Read more here.

New In-Depth Guides

We continued our effort to provide valuable resources to our community by publishing in-depth guides on key topics. Some of the most popular ones include:

  • NDT (Non-Destructive Testing): What It Is, Common Methods & Industries, and How Drones Can Help
  • Indoor Drones: What They Are, What They Do, and the Different Types on the Market
  • Boiler Inspections: What They Are, How They Are Conducted, and How Drones Can Help

We published 11 guides in total. View them all here.
