FAW Group New Energy Bus Base Settled in Dalian
Recently, the "New Energy Bus Production Base" jointly established by FAW Group and the Dalian Municipal Government held a groundbreaking ceremony in the Dalian Economic Development Zone. This significant event marks a major step forward in FAW's new energy vehicle strategy and strengthens the collaboration between FAW and Dalian. In addition, Dalian Bus Group signed a 160 million yuan procurement agreement with FAW Bus Dalian Bus Factory, which includes 150 hybrid buses and 110 natural gas buses. FAW Group's General Manager Xu Jianyi emphasized that this project is a crucial milestone in the company's efforts to promote new energy vehicles and deepen its partnership with Dalian.
The new production base is located at No. 57 in the Dalian Economic and Technological Development Zone, covering an area of 138,000 square meters with a total investment of 600 million yuan. The facility will be equipped with advanced manufacturing technology and cutting-edge production equipment, ensuring that stamping, welding, painting, and final assembly processes meet top domestic and international standards. The base is expected to be completed and operational by July 2010, with an annual production capacity of 3,000 passenger vehicles by 2013, half of which will be new energy buses.
Since 2001, FAW Group has invested heavily in research and development for new energy buses under the national "863" plan. The company has successfully developed prototypes of hybrid buses, including the powertrain, electronically controlled engine systems, and AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) systems—each featuring independent intellectual property rights. These innovations have significantly accelerated the commercialization of new energy buses.
In December 2008, the Dalian Municipal Government, the Economic and Technical Development Zone Management Committee, and FAW Group signed a strategic cooperation agreement to establish a production base for energy-saving and new energy buses. This agreement designated the FAW-Dalian bus plant as the sole production site for FAW’s energy-saving and new energy buses. In February of this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and other four national departments selected 13 cities, including Dalian, as demonstration and promotion sites for energy-saving and new energy vehicles.
Li Wancai, Acting Mayor of Dalian City, highlighted during the groundbreaking ceremony that energy-saving and new energy vehicles are the future direction of the automotive industry and a key area for developing the "green industry." He noted that the new energy bus base built through the collaboration between Dalian and FAW reflects the city’s commitment to sustainable economic and social growth. It not only supports environmental protection and the creation of an ecological, livable city but also provides a rare opportunity for the development of Dalian’s emerging industries.
Under the current economic conditions, especially in response to the impact of the global financial crisis, the new energy bus project is a vital initiative to implement central government policies aimed at expanding domestic demand, maintaining economic growth, and adjusting industrial structures. As one of the national demonstration cities for energy-saving and new energy vehicles, Dalian plans to further refine supportive policies, accelerate the implementation of the “33511†project, and fully support FAW’s operations in the city. The goal is to quickly build up the industry scale, ensure the completion of national demonstration tasks, and contribute to the healthy and rapid development of China’s energy-saving and new energy vehicle industry.
