Four employees of a Waukegan chemical plant were hospitalized, while three others were reported missing after a massive explosion occurred late Friday evening. The blast, which was felt and heard across Lake County around 9:45 p.m., sent shockwaves through the community and raised immediate concerns about the safety of workers at the AB Specialty Silicones plant located at 3790 Sunset Ave.

Waukegan Fire Marshal Steve Lenzi stated that first responders arrived quickly but were soon overwhelmed by the intensity of the fire at the facility, situated on the city’s far northwest side near the border with Gurnee. The scene became chaotic as emergency crews worked to contain the flames and locate those who had gone missing.

In response to the incident, firefighters from Waukegan, along with teams from Lake and Cook counties, including hazardous materials specialists and structural collapse technicians, joined the effort. Their work involved not only battling the fire but also conducting extensive searches for the missing employees, highlighting the severity of the situation and the coordinated response from multiple agencies.
