Winter Energy Debt: Are You Worried About Your Bills?

As the colder months approach, shorter days and crispier air remind us that it's time to think about optimizing our energy usage. While wholesale energy costs may be dropping, concerns about rising utility bills remain a pressing issue for many households. Last year's spike in energy costs has left many questioning whether they can even afford to keep their homes warm. To better understand the financial strain caused by energy bills, we recently conducted a survey among 1,000 people across the UK. The findings showed that nearly two-thirds (62%) of respondents have experienced financial difficulties due to last winter's high energy bills. Seventy-six percent of those surveyed expressed worries about this winter's energy costs, fearing further financial strain. Here’s a quick glance at some of the survey’s key findings in the infographic below: ![Infographic](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/07e18a4cad9e90483e1ed4ddd47d86fb.png) To help you prepare for the upcoming winter, we’ve compiled a list of practical tips to keep your home warm without breaking the bank. Let’s dive into some actionable advice inspired by our survey and expert insights. ### Swap Your Duvets for Winter Comfort One simple yet effective strategy is to upgrade your bedding. Nearly half (45%) of those surveyed switched to warmer duvets during winter. Using a thicker duvet can significantly reduce the need to crank up the thermostat. Alternatively, layering multiple thinner duvets or adding extra blankets can provide similar warmth. Consider turning the heating on just before bed to warm the room and rely on your bedding to retain the heat throughout the night. This can save both energy and money. ### Embrace Hot Water Bottles A tried-and-tested method to stay cozy is the trusty hot water bottle. Pre-warming your bed with a hot water bottle before sleeping is a budget-friendly way to stay comfortable. Additionally, having one nearby during the day can provide instant warmth without needing to touch the heater dials. ### Bleed Your Radiators for Efficiency Did you know that bleeding your radiators is a quick way to improve heating efficiency? Thirty-seven percent of respondents in our survey make it a habit to bleed their radiators regularly before winter begins. If you're unfamiliar with the process, here’s a simple guide: 1. Turn off the heating and wait for the radiators to cool completely. 2. Locate the bleed valve—usually a small square inside a circular nut at the top of the radiator—and use a bleed key to release trapped air. 3. Turn the key counterclockwise until air hisses out. Once water starts dripping, tighten the valve. 4. Repeat for all radiators and then turn the heating back on to check their performance. ### Draught-Proof Your Home Preventing drafts is another effective way to keep your home warm. Twenty-two percent of respondents said they take steps to draft-proof their homes. Common areas for drafts include doors and windows. Placing draft excluders or even rolled-up towels under doors can stop cold air from seeping in. On sunny days, open your curtains to let sunlight naturally warm the room. As evening falls, close them to trap the heat inside. ### Dress for Warmth Dressing warmly indoors is perhaps the easiest way to stay comfortable. Opt for cozy jumpers and thick pajamas to keep the chill away. Layering up not only keeps you warm but also helps reduce the need for excessive heating. ### Smart Thermostat Usage Strategic use of your central heating can lead to significant savings. If you're only using a few rooms, consider turning off radiators in unused spaces. For instance, bedrooms can be heated just before bedtime and turned off once you've gone to sleep. This approach not only cuts costs but also contributes to environmental sustainability. Regular maintenance of your boiler is equally important. Keeping it in frost protection mode and scheduling regular servicing ensures it operates efficiently, preventing costly repairs. ### Harness Solar Power Seven percent of those surveyed have invested in solar panels to offset energy costs. Contrary to popular belief, solar panels function well even in cloudy weather. They allow you to generate your own electricity, potentially reducing reliance on the grid. Any excess energy can even be sold back to the National Grid, providing additional income. Monitoring energy usage with a smart meter gives you insights into peak energy times, helping you optimize consumption patterns. Over time, these savings can alleviate financial stress and contribute to a greener planet.
