In a year marked by challenges across most sectors, the solar industry emerged as a beacon of progress and innovation. Last year saw unprecedented growth in solar power production, with renewable energy sources pushing coal plants into retirement and customers enjoying free energy from eco-friendly suppliers. Additionally, corporate investments in commercial solar hit an all-time high, signaling a growing commitment to sustainable practices. Around the globe, businesses are recognizing the numerous advantages of adopting solar power solutions. A commercial solar installation isn't just about reducing carbon footprints and cutting energy costs—it’s also a powerful statement of intent. Brands are increasingly using their solar investments as symbols of their dedication to environmental responsibility and forward-thinking leadership. These initiatives help reinforce their image as modern, forward-looking organizations committed to safeguarding the planet. To highlight some of the trailblazers in the commercial solar space, we’ve compiled a list of companies that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to solar energy. Being a UK-based team, we’ve placed extra emphasis on businesses operating within the UK or having a strong local presence, along with notable solar projects taking place in the UK.  Who Made the Cut? Surprisingly, the number one spot went to Associated British Ports, thanks to their substantial investment in solar power. They installed the UK’s largest rooftop solar system, featuring 21,000 panels capable of powering 1,570 homes annually. This accomplishment places them ahead of other contenders. Close behind, Marks and Spencer earned praise for their impressive solar array at their Castle Donington distribution center. They also introduced an innovative share scheme allowing customers to invest in solar panels at eight of their UK retail locations—a creative way to engage consumers in sustainability. Amazon secured third place with its massive rooftop solar project at their Tilbury fulfillment center, boasting over 11,000 panels—the largest installation of its kind among all European Amazon sites. Known for their extensive investments in renewable energy worldwide, Amazon remains particularly enthusiastic about solar power. Other notable entries include tech giants like Aviva, Facebook, and Tesco, alongside retail partners like the John Lewis Partnership. Two standout names from outside the traditional tech-retail sphere are the Cambridge University Press and the insurance provider Aviva, both of whom have made significant strides in solar and renewable energy relative to their peers. When ranking our solar superstars, we didn’t rely solely on total capacity figures. We factored in the proportion of each company's overall green energy portfolio dedicated to solar, giving preference to firms heavily focused on this technology over those leaning toward wind or other renewables. We also prioritized tangible impacts rather than vague future goals or long-term commitments. Combining these elements, we created a comprehensive scorecard for all ten companies on our list. As we continue monitoring developments in the commercial solar sector in the UK, expect regular updates on these companies' progress and further positive news from the corporate world.
