Springfield FD adding small squads>
The Springfield Fire Department has placed an order with Alexis Fire Equipment for two small rescue squads built on Ford F-550 chassis. The goal is to support ambulance units and reduce the wear and tear on the department’s larger, more costly fire apparatus. This strategic move aims to improve operational efficiency and extend the lifespan of key equipment.
According to a recent article in *The State Journal-Register*, the department plans to add these smaller vehicles this year to better handle medical emergencies. Fire Chief Ken Fustin explained that the new "squads" will help preserve the life of the department's main fire engines and trucks. In fact, about 60% of all calls are medical-related, making it essential to have specialized units ready for such incidents.
The purchase of the two rescue vehicles was approved by the city’s aldermen during last year’s budget process. The department acquired two used 2012 Ford F-550 chassis from Landmark Ford and is working with Alexis Fire Equipment to install custom rescue bodies. Alexis submitted the lowest bid, and the total cost for the two units came to $200,822.
Chief Fustin has already requested an additional $125,000 in next year’s budget to acquire a third vehicle. His goal is to have all three squads operational by the end of December. Once fully deployed, the department expects to reduce the number of calls handled by traditional fire trucks and engines by 4,000 to 5,000 annually.
In 2011, the Springfield Fire Department responded to 16,431 calls for service, with nearly 9,527 of those being medical-related—accounting for approximately 58% of all incidents. By introducing these smaller, more agile units, the department hopes to enhance response times and better allocate resources where they're needed most.
A photo of the custom-built rescue body being constructed by Alexis is available, showing the progress of the project. More details can be found in the full article.
