Lightning strike in Glenview, 8-25-14
As I sit here reflecting on the events that unfolded last night, I can't help but think about the power of nature and the bravery of those who stand up against it. Around 9 PM, a severe storm rolled through our area, and lightning struck a house located at 4177 Midway Lane in Glenview. The heavy smoke that billowed out of the residence quickly turned the situation into something much more serious than initially anticipated.
The Glenview Fire Department immediately upgraded their response to a full-scale operation, calling in reinforcements from neighboring towns like Morton Grove, Niles, Northfield, and Wilmette. It was a sight to see as emergency vehicles flooded the scene, each bringing its own set of skills and equipment necessary for such an intense situation.
One of the first responders, Morton Grove’s Quint 4, was already out on another call when they received the distress signal. Instead of returning to base and then heading back out again, they were instructed to head straight to the fire site. Their ambulance counterpart, Ambulance 4, also arrived shortly thereafter, ensuring there would be enough personnel on hand to manage any potential injuries or emergencies.
Looking at some of the photos taken by Larry Shapiro, you can really feel the intensity of the moment. In one image, firefighters are seen venting the roof of the burning building—a critical step in controlling the blaze. Another captures several firefighters standing near the house, clearly focused on assessing the damage and strategizing how best to extinguish the flames. There’s even a picture showing exhausted yet determined men after what must have been hours of hard work battling the inferno.
There’s also a striking silhouette shot where you only see the outline of a firefighter against the backdrop of orange flames—symbolic perhaps of humanity standing firm amidst chaos. And let us not forget about all the impressive firefighting machinery involved; everything from Pierce aerial ladder trucks to various types of fire engines like E-ONES and PIERCES—all playing crucial roles in containing this dangerous situation.

Reflecting on yesterday evening makes me incredibly grateful for professionals like these firefighters who put themselves in harm’s way every single day so we don’t have to face such threats directly ourselves.自然ç¾å®³çš„力é‡ä»¤äººæ•¬ç•,而那些敢于对抗它的人则值得我们深深的敬æ„。
