House fire in Des Plaines, 12-22-21

On the morning of December 22, 2021, Des Plaines Ambulance 61 and North Maine Fire Protection District Engine 1 were dispatched to a three-unit split-level home at 51 N. East River Road due to a reported case of trouble breathing. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire coming from the first-floor living room. They immediately declared a working fire and began their response. Before the first hose line was deployed, the ambulance crew entered the structure and successfully rescued a resident from a second-floor bedroom that was quickly filling with smoke. The situation was serious, and the alarm was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm to bring in additional resources. Firefighters worked quickly and managed to extinguish the fire before all responding units arrived on scene. The blaze was contained to the unit of origin, preventing further spread. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, though the home sustained significant damage. The incident highlights the quick response and bravery of both emergency medical and fire personnel who acted swiftly to save lives and limit the impact of the fire. Photos from the scene, taken by Larry Shapiro, show the aftermath of the fire and the efforts of first responders. Additional images are available in the gallery below for a closer look at the event.
