Gurnee is on the site>
The Gurnee Fire Department has recently joined the growing list of fire departments featured on the website, becoming the latest addition from Lake County’s MABAS Division 4. Covering an area of 33 square miles, this department is responsible for the well-known Six Flags Great America amusement park and the massive Gurnee Mills outlet mall. Their firefighting fleet exclusively consists of E-ONE apparatus, and all four of their ambulances are Type I models built on either IHC 4700 or IHC 4300 series chassis. Interestingly, a new Type I ambulance is currently on order from Wheeled Coach.
Gurnee also serves as the home base for several specialized MABAS assets. Among these is a unique 1991 Mack/Volvo roll-off chassis, which is utilized to transport metal storage containers housing essential equipment and supplies for MABAS Divisions 4 & 5. One container is specifically equipped for the Technical Rescue Team (TRT), complete with tools and lumber, while the other supports the Wildland Task Force, featuring resources like an ATV.
An image showcasing the Lake County and McHenry County TRT unit highlights the collaborative efforts within the region. Meanwhile, another photograph captures Gurnee Fire Department headquarters, Station 1, located on Old Grand Avenue. The station is a key part of the community infrastructure, as it oversees operations across the diverse geographical area.
A fascinating aspect of the E-ONE apparatus in Gurnee is the variety of chassis and cab styles present. For instance, there are engines equipped with the latest version of the Cyclone II chassis, featuring a distinctive tilt-cab design. In contrast, older models such as a 1995 engine utilize the earlier Cyclone chassis with a fixed cab. Additionally, the department’s tower ladder, built on a Hurricane chassis with a fixed cab, stands as a testament to the evolution of firefighting technology over the years.
One memorable moment occurred in 1998 when Gurnee acquired its new E-ONE tower ladder. To celebrate, they arranged for a photograph of the vehicle alongside one of the town's most iconic landmarks at the time—Gurnee Mills, then advertised as the largest outlet mall in the United States. Planet Hollywood, a prominent restaurant at the mall, further added to the allure of the scene.
Another highlight is Gurnee Squad 1352, which was initially equipped with a four-door Sentry cab and a vista roof. The Sentry cab is easily recognizable due to its straight, non-contoured driver’s door design. The vista roof, a raised roof option without full-height rear doors, gave the vehicle a distinct appearance. This photo, taken inside Six Flags Great America during the squad’s delivery, reflects the pride and attention to detail that goes into each piece of equipment.
Overall, the Gurnee Fire Department continues to enhance its operational capabilities through strategic acquisitions and thoughtful planning, ensuring they remain prepared for any emergency situation that arises within their jurisdiction.
