Fatal explosion and fire in Waukegan, 5-3-19

A major explosion at a Waukegan chemical plant on Friday night left four employees hospitalized and three others missing, according to local authorities. The incident, which occurred around 9:45 p.m., was felt and heard across Lake County, raising concerns about the safety of nearby residents and workers.

Fire Marshal Steve Lenzi of Waukegan confirmed that emergency crews arrived at the scene of the AB Specialty Silicones plant located at 3790 Sunset Ave., but were quickly overwhelmed by intense flames. The facility is situated in the city’s far northwest area, near the border with Gurnee.

Emergency response efforts involved firefighters from Waukegan, as well as teams from Lake and Cook counties, including hazardous materials specialists and structural collapse technicians. These teams worked simultaneously to control the fire and conduct search operations for the missing individuals.
