2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 1-17-20

On January 17, 2020, Truck Company 48 responded to a fire at 1539 S. Hamlin during a severe snowstorm. The building was an empty, three-story ordinary construction structure measuring 30’x75’. Engine 109 was the first engine on scene since Engine 38 was occupied with an EMS call. Battalion 14 arrived quickly and immediately established a defensive position due to the difficulty of forcible entry and the fact that the fire had already spread across all three floors. Engines 38 and 99 were assigned as box engines, supplying water to the master streams (TL5 and SS1). Shortly after, a 2-2-4 alarm was called for additional manpower, though it's believed the 2-11 engines weren’t deployed. The weather conditions were extremely challenging, with wind gusts reaching up to 35 mph and heavy snowfall throughout the incident, making firefighting efforts very difficult.
