Zion 3rd Alarm Fire & Haz Mat Box 6-17-12 (update)

More on the fire in Zion on Sunday at Maine Plastics. The fire occurred in the outside yard of a recycling facility that processes various paper goods and materials into large bundles for reuse by others. According to the company's website: > "Maine Plastics is a buyer, seller, and recycler of plastics, metals, paper scrap, and uncommon materials. We also offer baling, grinding, material separation, metal detection, and removal services at our plants nationwide." First-arriving companies reached the scene around 7 AM, and the alarm was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm. They also requested the Quad 2 Foam Unit (a 1992 Oshkosh T-3000) from Round Lake. Approximately an hour later, a second alarm was called for additional resources. The Winthrop Harbor and Zion trucks were deployed with elevated master streams on the north side of the facility, while the Antioch tower ladder was set up to the south. When the ARFF arrived, the Zion truck was repositioned, and the water supply for Winthrop Harbor was redirected to the ARFF. Photos from the scene show thick smoke rising from what appeared to be the industrial building at 1817 Kenosha Road—though the actual fire was outside behind the building. Firefighters used elevated master streams to tackle the blaze, with the Quad 2 Foam Unit playing a key role in suppression efforts. A third alarm was called an hour later, followed by a Haz Mat Box Alarm to assess the risks posed by burning plastics and other materials. Multiple departments from across Illinois and Wisconsin responded, including engines, trucks, ambulances, squads, and special duty units. Units on the scene represented five different MABAS Divisions and spanned five counties (Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kenosha, and Racine) as well as two states (Illinois and Wisconsin). Additional water supply was needed to support the Round Lake tower ladder, so Newport Township’s hose tender dropped 2,500 feet of 5-inch LDH to a nearby pond for drafting. Engines from Paris and Pleasant Prairie were placed in-line to boost pressure for the long run. As the fire continued to burn, flare-ups persisted even after several hours of suppression. The ARFF worked tirelessly to douse remaining hot spots, while debris was moved by end loaders. A wide array of specialty apparatus, including air and decon units, were also on-site to manage the situation. For more photos from the incident, click here.
