Zhejiang Metrology Institute approved the National Natural Science Foundation of China to specialize in atmospheric measurement

The Zhejiang Institute of Metrology recently received approval for a National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC) project, marking the third such grant since the institute became an independent funding unit in China. This achievement highlights the growing research capabilities and scientific innovation within the institute, especially in the field of atmospheric measurement. The National Natural Science Foundation is a cornerstone of China’s national innovation system, serving as one of the primary channels for supporting basic scientific research. It represents the highest level of natural science research in the country and is widely regarded as the most standardized, fair, and credible funding source for researchers. Securing an NSFC grant is a significant indicator of a researcher's academic excellence and the quality of their proposed project. The approved project, led by Dr. Pan Sunqiang from the Zhejiang Institute of Metrology, focuses on "Study on Atmospheric Aerosol Optical Properties Measurement Technology Based on Photoacoustic and Cavity Ringdown Composite Spectroscopy." This initiative aims to develop advanced techniques for measuring atmospheric aerosols, which play a critical role in environmental monitoring and public health. The team has been actively engaged in research related to particle mass concentration and gas detection, particularly for trace toxic substances, addressing key challenges in the industry. Their work has not only improved measurement accuracy but also enhanced the competitiveness of local industries. By providing reliable measurement solutions, the team supports Zhejiang Province’s efforts in combating air pollution and achieving cleaner air. Their contributions are essential in the broader context of environmental protection and sustainable development. So far, the team has made notable progress in atmospheric metrology, completing 11 provincial and departmental projects, obtaining three invention patents, and drafting two regulatory standards. Their research has been published in leading journals such as *Sensors & Actuators A: Physical* and *Spectroscopy and Spectral Analysis*, further establishing their reputation in the field. In recent years, the Zhejiang Institute of Metrology has focused on enhancing its capacity to support economic and social development through scientific innovation. The institute has significantly improved its research capabilities, with a strong emphasis on both fundamental and applied research. Looking ahead, the institute plans to continue investing in measurement technology research, aiming to enhance the quality and efficiency of its measurement services. It will also play a vital role in supporting modern governance, high-quality economic growth, and the enhancement of national core competitiveness.
