Of interest … Cancer in the Fire Service

Excerpts from thedrum.com:

DetecTogether, a non-profit organization focused on promoting early cancer detection and prevention, has launched a national education campaign specifically targeting firefighters. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the heightened cancer risk faced by those in the fire service.

The campaign is based on data from the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, which highlights that occupational cancer is now the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths among firefighters. In fact, they are 14% more likely to die from cancer than the general population. Despite these alarming numbers, DetecTogether chose a unique approach—using humor and creativity to engage firefighters and encourage them to take action against cancer.

The campaign features firefighters showcasing their hidden talents, including musical skills and dance moves. One of the stars is Jason Patton, a firefighter and paramedic known for his popular Fire Department Chronicles series, which has nearly 2 million followers online. He is joined by other members of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) in videos filmed at the FDNY training academy on Randall’s Island.

"Our jobs are incredibly serious," Patton said. "Lives are on the line every day. But between calls, while we're at the station, we like to have some fun. That's exactly what DetecTogether's videos do—they use comedy to inspire firefighters to take real steps against cancer."

The public service announcement (PSA) also introduces DetecTogether’s “3 Steps Detect” program—a simple roadmap for early cancer detection. According to the organization, the process includes:

  1. Know Your Great: Understand what 'great' feels like for your personal health.
  2. Use the 2-Week Rule: Seek medical attention if subtle changes in your health persist for two weeks.
  3. Share With Your Doctor: Discuss any changes in your health—even if they feel uncomfortable or embarrassing.

This approach emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and timely communication with healthcare professionals, making early detection more accessible and less intimidating.

The second video in the campaign continues the humorous tone, with Patton playfully teasing his colleague, O’Malley, while holding a dummy. This lighthearted approach helps break down barriers and encourages open conversations about health concerns.

The campaign was developed in collaboration with a Chicago-based ad agency, building upon DetecTogether’s existing “Response Time Matters” initiative. It received support from several key partners, including EMW-2021-FP-00573, 1A Auto, Last Call Foundation, Powertech Controls, the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY), the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, and the Center for Fire, Rescue & EMS Research.
