Chicago Still Alarm 9-10-11>
Tim Olk was, for once, exactly where he needed to be yesterday morning when the Fire Alarm Office issued a Still Alarm at 510 S. California. Tim was nearby and arrived just behind Engine 107, only to find a two-story "ordinary" building that was vacant, with an adjacent structure on one side and an empty lot on the other. Thick smoke was pouring from the second floor, signaling a serious situation. The responding companies acted swiftly, making a solid initial attack and managing to contain the fire at a Still Alarm level. Tim captured a few shots of the scene and has a full gallery available here.
It’s always reassuring to see firefighters respond so efficiently, especially in situations where the fire could have spread quickly due to the building's layout and surrounding structures. Tim’s photos give a real sense of the conditions on the ground—smoke rolling out of the upper floors, the urgency of the crews working to control the blaze, and the importance of early intervention. A great reminder of why being on the scene early can make all the difference.
