Box Alarm fire in Prospect Heights, 8-25-22>
On Thursday at 1:00 PM, Prospect Heights and Wheeling firefighters responded to a fire at 818 Old Willow Road. The RED Center received multiple calls with background shouting and quickly escalated the incident to a Working Fire shortly after the initial dispatch. Prospect Heights Chief 900 was the first on scene and reported heavy smoke and fire escaping from the roof of a two-story multi-unit apartment building, with several residents evacuating.
Fire crews made an interior attack and discovered intense fire in the main area and an interior wall. The alarm was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm to bring in additional personnel for support. Des Plaines Tower 61 was deployed to vent the roof. Notably, Des Plaines FD Tower 61 has been working alongside the reserve Northbrook FD Tower 12 for several months and was seen at the scene.
Approximately six units were damaged due to the fire, water, or checks for fire spread. However, the Prospect Heights Building Department determined that the entire building was temporarily uninhabitable for all residents.
The response included numerous fire companies: Prospect Heights Engine 39, Squad 9, Engine 900, and Battalion 9; Wheeling Ambulance 24, Engine 23, Truck 24, Engine 2400, Engine 2401, and Battalion 24; Mount Prospect Ambulance 14 and 301; Des Plaines Tower 61; Glenview Engine 8; North Maine Engine 1 and Battalion 1; Niles Truck 2; Long Grove Squad 55; Buffalo Grove Engine 26; and Northbrook Tower 12.
