Tanker rolls and closes I294 3-20-12>
Tim Olk spent most of Tuesday stationed in the southbound lanes of the Tri-State Tollway (I-294), capturing the aftermath of a major accident that caused significant traffic chaos. According to a report from the Southtown Star:
… an overturned tanker led to the closure of the southbound lanes between 95th and 127th streets. The lanes remained shut from before noon until around 8 p.m., turning what should have been a routine rush hour into a nightmare for commuters …
The incident occurred when a vehicle made an illegal U-turn in front of the tanker, which was carrying hydrochloric acid. The collision caused the truck to overturn at approximately 11:43 a.m. near 127th Street, according to Illinois State Police Trooper Michelle Kistulinec.
The spill prompted emergency crews to respond quickly, using sand to contain the chemical and prevent further spread. Firefighters and contractors worked through the afternoon to safely drain and transfer the hazardous material.
