A heartfelt ceremony took place on Monday in North Chicago, where Flight for Life officials recognized the North Chicago Fire Department for one of the most remarkable rescues of 2015. They honored local firefighters and police officers for their life-saving efforts in saving a Chicago woman last fall.

The 22nd annual Scene Call of the Year Award for 2015 was given to the firefighting paramedic team consisting of Cmdr. Joshua Rickabaugh, Cmdr. Joshua Monroe, and firefighters Danny Roark, Joseph Hernandez, and Joseph Schimanski.

Nicole Wood, a passenger in a BMW SUV, was involved in a serious crash with a gravel truck on Route 41, south of Route 137, on September 21. While the driver of the SUV was not seriously injured, Wood became trapped under the wreckage, crushed beneath the heavy truck.

Rescue crews used nearly every tool available in their trucks to free the critically injured and unconscious woman. To facilitate the arrival of a helicopter, Route 41 was temporarily closed off to create a safe landing zone.

"We knew the victim had multiple system trauma, and it was crucial to get her out as quickly as possible," Rickabaugh said. However, he also noted that due to the complexity of the extrication, it took over an hour and 20 minutes — far longer than the usual 20 to 40 minutes.

North Chicago officials highlighted the teamwork and critical support provided by personnel from Naval Station Great Lakes, Knollwood, Libertyville, the North Chicago Police Department, North Chicago Police dispatch, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and Flight for Life.

Fire Chief Dell Urban described the incident as "the call of a lifetime" and called it an extraordinary accident. He mentioned that several chiefs on the scene said they had never encountered anything like it in terms of the prolonged rescue effort.

Out of approximately 1,000 calls Flight for Life responds to annually, only a small number are selected by a panel of judges based on specific criteria for air medical transport. The submissions were evaluated for factors such as scene safety, triage decisions, critical thinking, complex planning, accident scene management, integration of the helicopter into the operation, and the use of skills that went above and beyond standard duties to treat the patient.
