Nationwide Boiler Announces Hydrogen Firing Capabilities for Existing Fleet of Rental Boilers

Nationwide Boiler Inc., a top-tier boiler supplier with over 100 units in its rental fleet, has made a significant move by announcing the capability to use hydrogen as a fuel for its existing package watertube rental boilers. This development comes at a time when climate change and decarbonization are major global priorities, and it aligns perfectly with the company’s long-term vision for a greener future.
“Back in the 1990s, Nationwide Boiler was the first rental boiler company to convert our entire watertube fleet to 30 ppm low NOx,†said Larry Day, President & CEO of Nationwide Boiler. “During that same decade, we saw the need to go even further in reducing emissions, which led to the creation of our CataStakâ„¢ SCR System for single-digit NOx compliance. Hydrogen combustion differs significantly from natural gas, but Nationwide Boiler's engineering team has extensive experience and data supporting the use of hydrogen-blend fuels in package boilers. The company’s high-quality construction standards—using premium valving, fuel trains, burners, and other components—mean that most of their current fleet can run on up to 20% hydrogen blended with natural gas without modifications. For higher hydrogen content, additional evaluations and potential burner adjustments may be needed.
“Hydrogen produces no CO2, making it cleaner than petroleum-based fuels,†explained David Spain, Technical Manager at Nationwide Boiler. “However, it does increase NOx emissions due to higher flame temperatures. Fortunately, our CataStakâ„¢ SCR system effectively reduces NOx levels, achieving as low as 2.5 ppm.
