Fatal fire in Chicago, 6-26-22 (more)

Excerpts from Fox32Chicago.com:

Three young brothers tragically lost their lives in a devastating fire that broke out early Sunday in a basement apartment in West Humboldt Park. The children were trapped with only one exit, which was blocked by flames. A fourth boy is currently in critical condition after the incident, which started in the back of the apartment at 4032 W. Potomac.

The mother of the children was also injured, suffering burns and smoke inhalation. As the flames blocked the back door—the only way out—she had to break a window to escape. She is now recovering in the hospital, still dealing with the effects of her injuries.

Firefighters arrived at 12:20 a.m. and found the apartment door locked from the inside. They had to force their way in, discovering two children unresponsive near the entrance and the other two on the opposite side of the unit. All four children were rescued and taken to the hospital with symptoms of smoke inhalation.

Aiden Cruz, 5, was pronounced dead at Saints Mary and Elisabeth Medical Center. Jayden Cruz, 6, and Angel Rodriguez, 11, were hospitalized but later succumbed to their injuries. The fourth child is still being treated in the hospital.

Authorities have determined that an open flame in one of the back rooms caused the fire, but the exact cause remains under investigation. It is not yet clear whether the fire was accidental or intentional.

Interestingly, firefighters reported hearing working smoke detectors upon arrival, yet none were found in the basement where the children were located. This raises concerns about safety measures in the building.

Property records indicate that the home had three apartments, including the basement, but it’s unclear if the basement was legally built or operated. The single exit point has become a central issue in the ongoing investigation.

All four boys were brothers living with their mother and her partner in the apartment. Their tragic deaths have left the community in shock and mourning, as families and neighbors grapple with the loss of innocent lives.
