European Union approves construction of biorefinery in Sweden

On January 27, 2011, the European Union approved the Swedish Energy Agency to invest 500 million Swedish kronor (55 million euros) in the construction of a biorefinery in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden.
The industrial-scale biofuel verification device will use the gasification technology of Chemrec, a technology provider headquartered in Domsjö Fabriker, to use forest residue as an energy feedstock to produce biomethanol or bio-DME.
The Alliance Committee believes that this R&D support is compatible with the EU's priority development goals.
Chemrec and its partners developed the Domsjö Fabriker biorefinery in September 2009 through research and development support.
The device will use Chemrec's black liquor gasification technology combined with advanced technologies for producing fuel. The project's investment is estimated at about 3 billion Swedish kronor. The completed plant will produce 140,000 tons of biomethanol or 100,000 tons of bio-dimethyl ether in a dual production facility.
Chemrec said that compared with gasoline or diesel, biofuels produced using the company's gasification technology can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 95%, and can use renewable fuels instead of imported fossil fuels.
