ESA invests billions in constructing the Euclid space telescope to study the expansion of the universe

Recently, the European Space Agency approved the construction of the space telescope, the Euclid Space-based Telescope, to study the expansion of the universe and will invest billions of dollars.

It is reported that the Euclid satellite weighing 2,160 kg will carry a 1.2-meter telescope and two cameras to try to find out the role of dark matter in the expansion of the universe. Euclid satellite plans to launch in 2020.

The camera carried by the Euclid satellite has a resolution comparable to that of the Hubble telescope, which has 576 megapixels and uses visible wavelengths to observe 2 billion galaxies. Another near-infrared camera will mainly study the “acceleration of the universe” and draw the distance and distribution of the Milky Way. At present, more than 1,000 scientists in Europe and scientists in the United States are participating in the discussion of this project.
