Barrington house fire 3-28-12
The Barrington Fire Department was called to a home fire at 23170 N. Church in Barrington around 9:30 PM on Wednesday. Residents reported a fire starting in the garage, which quickly spread into the house. When Barrington Engine 363 arrived first, they found a fully involved garage fire attached to the structure.
Just moments later, Lake Zurich Engine 2 responded and made a U-turn in the dead-end cul-de-sac, laying 400 feet of 5-inch supply line to the end of the street. A Barrington tanker dropped its portable tank, establishing a water source as crews advanced two lines through separate doors of the house. The building was situated on a hill, with a one-story front and a two-story side.
As the situation escalated, Barrington requested a MABAS Box Alarm, bringing in additional resources from Wauconda, Fox River Grove, and East Dundee. Long Grove Tanker 55 also joined the effort. Palatine sent Truck 85, while engines from Hoffman Estates, Palatine Rural, and Carpentersville arrived. Rolling Meadows provided backup for a company that couldn’t send an ambulance, and Cary Squad 255 deployed a light tower to improve scene visibility.
Barrington Engine 3 was positioned in the cul-de-sac, supplying three total lines. Firefighters worked aggressively to contain the blaze, hitting hot spots in the destroyed garage. Despite the intensity, all residents safely evacuated, though the family dog did not survive.
The fire had caused extensive damage, particularly to the rear of the house, which wasn't immediately visible from the street. As the fire was brought under control, crews began mop-up operations along the garage foundation. Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, arrived after the flames were out and captured the aftermath, including the silhouette of a firefighter emerging from the smoke.
