5-Alarm fire in Peru (IL)>
Firegeezer.com has been closely following a major fire that broke out around midnight at the former Wextclox watch and clock factory complex in Peru, Illinois—located 100 miles southwest of Chicago. According to reports, the incident has drawn significant attention due to its scale and impact on the local community.
The massive complex, made up of 44 buildings, spans a 2-block by 4-block area in downtown Peru. At daybreak, the fire was still raging out of control, prompting evacuations of nearby homes as a precaution. Firefighters from multiple departments have been deployed to the scene, with officials describing the blaze as a "very large fire."
The Washington Post National published an article with photos, highlighting that two teenage boys—one 15 years old from Peru and the other 17 from La Salle—have been charged with aggravated arson. The older teen, being treated as an adult, appeared in court and had his bond set at $250,000. According to the News Tribune, the teens entered the building, poured gasoline from a can they found there onto a boat inside, set it on fire, and then left. A tip from an anonymous caller led police to the suspects.
The fire caused propane tanks to explode, leading to a mandatory evacuation of nearby residents. However, by 11 a.m., most people were allowed to return home. Those who remained were kept out due to smoke drifting directly toward their homes.
There are also video recordings available of the 5-alarm fire at the historic Westclox factory. The fire was intentionally set by the two teenagers, who timed it so that the flames started exactly 8 seconds after midnight. One firefighter from LaSalle was injured and underwent surgery earlier today.
You can watch live footage of the fire from DeKalb Feed on Justin.tv. The 5th alarm was sounded at the beginning of Part 2. These videos provide a real-time look at one of the largest fires in recent local history, showing the intensity and response efforts from emergency services.
